It has been widely known by those who have first-hand encounters with it that there is a limitless field of energy upon which our consciousness rides.  Focused in bodies, yes, for this life, but we are also multidimensional beings that are more than just “this.”

To understand psi ability, it helps to understand what the genesis is for your ability and experience.  What we call “psi” is a living energy that moves through all things and all-time.  It forms a kind of body that is part of you and yet your ego makes it possible for you to identify yourself as separate from it, which is a boundless field of energy.  Instead of the physical senses forming your inner senses, the inner senses are part of a continuum of sensory ability that is your native infinite self.  The physical senses mirror a smaller subset of senses that are part of a larger sensory realm of the soul or consciousness. Your five senses are just a few of your fuller sensory capacity. These inner senses are always with you, but most people are too focused on the physical senses to ever begin exploring the broader field of these inner senses.

The Egyptians identified 360 different senses that were known or described as being part of the inner self and in no way physical.

The way to tap into these senses is to develop the right cognitive bridge for them to your brain, which will assemble the information in a useful way.  The same happens when someone sees an aura, for example.  There is nothing to see because the eyes do not have the capacity to pick up on the wavelength of energy that is the human aura.  What happens is that the brain does an amazing job at creating a representation, most often visual, of what it is that it is detecting.  When you consider just how much information is present in the human aura from one moment to the next, its pretty mind boggling that the brain is able to do this. But it does.  The same is the case with all other inner senses.  For those who can hear or see events from a distance, the information is presented in a highly accurate way even though it is information that is plucked out of the air and assembled into something that makes sense and is accurate. Think of this as being like how a radio set takes radio waves and turns them into a broad range of sound.

The more you are able to do this work “cold” without anything to bias you in any way is best.  The more you know about a situation, the more you have to not let that information come into play.  I once was able to remote view a woman’s apartment with amazing detail, getting all details correct.  These were specific details that had to do with how the apartment was situated in a larger building, the type of lighting in the hallways(sconces instead of pendants or ceiling mounted units), as well as the layout of the apartment including the types of windows, their construction (old metal casement)  and their size.  The one detail that I got wrong was the result of bias that I had when I had talked to this person on the phone.  I incorrectly “saw” the size of her living room.  I saw it much larger than it was.  The reason for this, I am certain, was because of the reverb that I heard over the phone prior to my seeing her apartment, that made it sound like she was in a much larger room than she was.  In this case, I would have probably been more accurate if I had not first spoken to her on the phone while she was in her apartment.

This is an important caution in doing this kind of work.  Personal thoughts or ideas can creep in very easily.  You have to keep this material out and learn when you are on the mark, how that feels when it happens, and continue to go to that “place” within feeling.  And contrary to popular belief, this place is not  found in a place of certainty.  You have to become comfortable looking first at a blank screen without trying to put something there that doesn’t beling. You begin with a blank sheet and you have nothing to work with at first.  You have to be able to keep your mind neutral even in this “blank screen” place.  You have to be able to not think about what it is that you imagine it all to be.  You actually need to not know.  The more you can do this, the better you can get clear information.  And this is not easy for a lot of people.  People are so used to apprehending information, going out and ‘getting’ it….but the capacity that allows you to do this best is like a mindless state.  You don’t know how on earth you are doing it….except that you are. If you think about it, neither are you aware of the process by which your physical senses operate, but they do.

Another big impediment to this kind of work is how the imagination is involved.  What you have to be able to do is you have to enter the gateway of the imagination and go beyond the region where your mind creates things and learn how to use the imagination as the engine for building imagery in your mind.  In a way, the process is the same; you start with nothing and you “image” something.  When YOU are actively imagining something, you are the one creating the information.  When you are seeing psychically, you are not the one who is creating it.  It is a subtle but important distinction. Instead, it often feels like it is being assembled within you as a sensory experience.  The difference is one you do, the other happens to you.  It is a slight difference but it is recognizable.  Ask yourself; am I thinking this, or is it happening to me?  If it is the latter, you will find, if you are doing this right, that this is the authentic material relatively untouched by how you think or feel about it.  You have to clear, and if you have biases about seeing something clearly, you wont.  In fact, I have had people read me who were very obviously drawing from their own insides or emotional material. It is hard to know when you are doing this because it will seem real. Most often a clue will be that you want it to be a certain way, or you are being too rigid in how you think you are sensing; being able to constantly ask yourself “is this true?” and then feel into it with your heart of deep compass of knowing is what I have always tried to do. It’s when I question myself and remain neutral that I tend to get the best results. By not remaining neutral,  you will effectively “cherry pick” the information, and this can lead to a world of distortion.  Again, keeping the mind shut off while feeling it is a critical point here. And it’s important that you can distinguish between your inner stuff that you feel and this inner compass of “feeling it.” Luckily, “feeling it” helps to keep the rational mind out of the picture so the information can stream in unhindered and uncolored.

In my work what I have found over the decades that the energy field, which is always “on” and taking in information, is the receiver.  You have tuned all of this information out and you can begin to tune it back in by using some of the same tools that your mind uses as it begins to go into dreaming.  So instead of a long drawn out explanation with methods, I will suggest that you begin paying attention to the very edge of your sleep before you fall into sleep.  This is where you can learn the most about the inner senses within you and you can begin to learn what it takes to keep the bridge erected within you while you are awake instead of when asleep.

As you begin to fall asleep at night, try to stay in that deep relaxed state and instead of falling asleep, remain there for an extended period.  You will find that you will drift in and out of normal consciousness.  As you do, you will find that you hear voices and sounds that seem to come from the inside of your head.  They might have a slightly “faraway” feeling to them. This is where your native capacity for tapping into these senses emerges.  The only difference between your doing it close to sleep and a psychic doing it while awake is that the psychic has learned how to build a cognitive bridge between different states of mind.  They can have one part of the waking brain fully alert while activating other parts of the brain that are normally associated with sleep. Some of this can seem a little akin to dream sometimes.

When you are awake, you will need to let yourself drift into that place where your thinking stops.  This is a highly charged in-body state that is where you can actually begin tuning in all kinds of information.  Mind you, you are actually already bringing a lot of it in, but you have your waking awareness focused in such a way that it gets filtered out.  It drifts into the background and only comes forward when you shut off your outer perceptions enough to begin to tune in that other part of you that has these abilities.  Everyone has these abilities.

The problem most people have when tuning in is that their sensory information that comes through their physical senses gets their most attention.  There is a certain amount of detachment that is always present in psi pursuits.  Turning off the inner mind chatter is key.  Only once you have done this can you hope to erect the bridge.  Once it is done, it becomes second nature and you do not have to work as hard to tap back into that state.  Many psychics when asked how they do what they do often are at a loss as to how to explain it.  Most often they use terms that suggest they are feeling something, but they can’t identify where it comes from.  Truth be told, if we were concerned with the mechanics, nothing would get done.  The vehicle, the body, makes this process effortless.

When you understand that all information, everything that has been, exists in a field of energy that takes up no space whatsoever, and is itself seeded throughout the universe, access to this information is a given once you know how or begin training yourself.  To do this requires you to turn on your ability to FEEL. You do not think.  You feel.

Don’t misunderstand; I am not saying emotion.  Feeling is not emotion.  Feeling is a capacity for perception.  Feeling includes emotion, but its more that emotion is a kind of subset of feeling.  See?  When you can dip down into the subconscious self, you can begin bridging the disparate parts of the self and bring in extrasensory experience.  All of this is entirely energetic in nature.  Your energy field picks up this information, tunes it in, and received it, and is paying attention to one piece of information over a vast swath of other material.  This field can be felt by your consciousness and it is felt all through the body.  I am aware that when I am picking up on information like this, I feel it all through my body, less as a perception of a reaction to the information and more as a direct experience of the information as it actually strikes me, my awareness, which is all through my body (not just the brain or head).  The energy vortices called chakras also have some play into all of this as amplifiers of information.  While they can amplify a signal they can also degrade it with noise.  You have to have a still quiet mind.  You need to be simple.  This is how it works.

The stimulation of the various chakra centers is also at work in inner sensory awareness. The third eye is one such center.  As unfortunate as it is that the third eye has been associated with the pineal gland ad nauseam, the pineal actually has nothing to do with it (this idea first emerged with a completely off the wall pronouncement by Voltaire that the pineal gland was the seat of the soul even though he had zero evidence for this at the time, except the idea stuck and has continued to enjoy being used as a mystic center of some kind or another).  Trust me, having a third eye-opening or activation has NOTHING to do with a gland in the head.  This gland is only for physical processes (secretions for the regulation of mood and sleep cycles only).  This is because a physical gland or organ is for working with physical matter.  The energy body is for working with nonphysical things.  And a third eye awakening will make it more likely that you can image things from a great distance.

The way to open the third eye is also a way to spark kundalini awakening, and anyone who does this need to understand that this can have unintended consequences if you are not careful. Awakening kundalini without preparation can make for a very difficult experience.

Most often psi work leads to improvement of the individual because developing the senses puts one in touch with a broader range of characteristics of the self that need to be dealt with because of greater awareness of the self as it is.  The vehicle, the light body, is the means for this inner sensing, and this light body needs to be clear in order to get clear transmission.  It also can lead to stumbling blocks for the healer or seer if they are unable to work through their own blocks.  These activities often lead to a more “spiritual” outlook and effort to be more refined.

I hope that this provides you with some new insight into this world of inner sensory capacity.  If you aren’t good at it, working on it will help.  If you already have prior experience (often from other lifetimes for example) then it will come more naturally.  But no one is more psychic than another.  When we leave the physical, we will all use our inner sensory abilities to the same degree as anyone else. In fact, you will have to. But beginning now will help to show you how you are more than just this one self.  This is very much at the core of what I feel is important for us to do here….to awaken to all of our capabilities, some of which will lead us into other realities as well as capacities that we all have as multidimensional beings alive in all-time.

It has been my feeling that when you can learn to use your inner senses that it helps to reveal to you an aspect of the world and of yourself that helps brings wonder and understanding to you.  Not long ago I was talking with my daughter, who for years had been told by her mother that her Dad was off his rocker when it came to my experiences in my inner life.  So I said to her that I could show her how to read auras.  I’d give her the master class over the summer so she could judge on her own just whose rocker belonged to who.  Its okay to be a skeptic.  In fact, its really important that you question the world around you, including claims about psi ability.  However, when you are faced with an ability like reading the aura, a whole new wrinkle in how you may have thought the world works opens up. And it is in this new view into the world that its important to test your abilities to make sure that YOU are comfortable with what it is that you think you are seeing or picking up on.

Let me explain what I mean.  When I first began seeing auras, I was lucky that I had a few friends who also were able to see them.  I utilized one friend’s ability as a type of “control” over about a year period as I tested what it was that I was seeing with my “new vision.”  We developed a kind of code that we used whenever we were out and about and I wanted to test what it was that I was seeing in the moment.  The code would be “What about that guy [pointing] up ahead in the fedora hat?”  for example.  She would then tune in and tell me what she saw.  The method was that I never revealed to her what it was I was seeing, I just wanted her to tune into a given person to test what it was I was seeing.  This was how I conducted a lot of my tests.  However, I also did other types of tests, too.

On the first day that I began to see auras, I was in a college classroom.  I had read about auras and had even known someone the previous summer who could see them, and I was fascinated with the idea that people could do this, so I learned a few things about it before I had begun to see them.  When I realized I was likely seeing them, I noticed some things right away that I remembered from my reading in a book about them.  While I was seeing this guy’s aura in class I noticed that he had these orange-yellow spires coming off his shoulders.  Everyone else’s aura was uniform around their bodies.  I surmized that this may have been the presence of pain in his physical body for some reason.  My classmate did not show outward signs of this pain, he just sat there in class like the rest of us.  Because he was someone from my dorm who lived on my floor, I walked up to him after class was through and said hello and clasped his shoulder gently in my welcome.  He winced and I pulled back asking if he was alright.  He explained that he had been lifting weights the previous evening with friends at the gym and had overdone it. His shoulders hurt!  “Huh” I thought.  I filed this bit of information away for later.

Over the following year I did countless “tests” like these, asking friends about what it was that I say in their energy field after I had seen evidence of something there previously.  I was able to build a rather large bank of information about the nature of the human energy field as a result of this that helped me to understand what I was seeing and also, perhaps more importantly, to show to myself and anyone else, that what I was seeing was beyond ordinary physical perception.

I will tell you that one of the last times that I actively read an aura was when I had the occasion to see Jane Goodall speak at a local school a few years ago.  We were in fairly close quarters in a small auditorium and found that I was seeing her energy.  For years I have not actively tuned in to energy in this way, but when I began seeing the flashes, I thought what the heck….and as I did, I was able to see something that I had seen on a few occasions, which was that I could detect the thought forms occurring in her mind moments before she would talk about them.  This was the interesting part because I was able to anticipate something she was going to say before she said it.  Thought forms are created in the mind as the mind is thinking about a memory or is somehow creating an image in their minds and this can sometimes be detected in the aura.  For years I had never seen such a thing, even though I had read about this in the book Hands of Light by Barbara Brennan.  So As I looked at her, I noticed that I was seeing a hunched form that had a distinctive loping kind of gate, and at the time Goodall was talking about a chimp that was hooting because she knew that another chimp was on its way.  She described the way that I saw the form seconds before she mentioned it as it moved just as she described.  These appeared not as solid objects, but were more like vapor-like forms, like a smudge on a window….ghostly in a way, but clearly present in yet another.

The aura or halo has been depicted throughout the East and West. Below, a Buddha sits with a head and body halo.

So having said this, I encourage you to test what it is you see.  I also encourage you to learn how to relate, just as I did, to the colors and what they mean.  There are lots of simple and straight-forward charts on the colors and their meanings.  I have noted that in my experience that most of them are accurate for the most part.  However, I have noticed that some colors are different for me than they are in the charts.  And why? The reason is, I observe, as a result of my own feelings about these colors.  In my last installment in this two-part series I explained that auras really can’t be detected by the physical eye, but that, rather, they are the result of a rather miraculous facility the brain has, apparently, for being able to take nonphysical sensory data (psi data) and translate it into usable “physical sensory” information.  This is the root of what happens with all psi abilities I have noticed. Years ago I once interviewed a physiological psychologist who teaches and does research in this area and I asked him if the brain received signals that do not come from the physical senses, will it ever put that data into a sensory slot to make it seem as though it is coming from one of the senses?  “Oh yes, most certainly!” was his reply.  However, even though this all sounds like one big trick of the brain, it is based in real phenomenon that is being picked up on.  Sadly, it is not something that scientists have troubled themselves with looking into all that much. It has been considered a fringe subject, and no one wants that label, apparently.

The Last Supper

Red is most often equated with passion, love, and anger.  In my experience I hardly ever see red in people because I have a problem believing that anger and love can be described by the same color.  Instead, love often comes through as an intensity of a lighter more spiritual color (for me).

Orange- has always been related to anguish and sadness, as well as subsumed anger.  I have only seen orange on two occasions.  One person had been in a bad fight with his son an hour before and the other person was recounting their experience in a Nazi death camp.  I have seen orange as physical pain, but most often it is only a tinge of it.  Your results may vary.

Yellow – this color has always represented what I call the middle of the road type of energy.  It is often detected in auras as a very common color for many people.  it has a relationship to mental energy and being in the head. This tends toward positive energy and is a vibrant color that can be deep or light depending on the concentration and focus within that range.

Green – this has always had a double meaning and is at once spiritual and rooted in the here and now, for the most part, which also makes it a healing energy.

Blue – a spiritual color. This often relates to a strong commitment to what you are doing, that you feel your work or your state of being is tied directly into a purpose.

Violet – this color is likewise spiritual, but with a strong influence of the intuitive.  Often people with this color will exhibit strong psychic abilities.

With the colors in hand, there are a number of different wrinkles that add an incredible amount of variation into the mix.  First, there is the intensity of the color, which I would call brightness.  This is how powerfully focused a person is.  Sometimes a strong color will mean a person is really focused in what the color means, but this can also mean that the person’s energy is simply very strong.  You can detect which is which by observing the person and how they speak to determine which this likely is. I have seen some people whose colors are amazingly light….like a very very faint ice-blue, for example, without a lot of saturation (concentration of color).  Often, this can reveal that the thoughts and feelings are not well focused.  In some cases, it can reveal an other-worldy kind of focus.  How the person is expressing themselves verbally will most often tell the tale if you listen long enough.

wp-1466044706458.jpeg

Another wrinkle is the size of the aura. For some people, the inner aura can be very compact and located close to the body.  This often is a strong local focus in the self and the body.  In some cases, the aura can be very large, in which case the person has not only a lot of energy, but a strong sense of presence.  This type of person is NOT a wallflower (usually).  Now having said that, you can get someone with a very strong aura like this who is very quiet.  Now what do you think that means

The other wrinkle is how the aura will shift and change from moment to moment. Does a person’s color change on a dime, or does it stay constant?  This says a lot about a person.
Some are like rocks while some are like kaleidoscopes.

In the image below, Ganesh is shown with the nimbus or aura around his head. This image comes very close to how the part of the aura appears that is closest to the body. There is normally lighter misty color that then surrounds the body, extending outward to about three to four feet.

The other wrinkle are what I call localized effects that can be striations in the aura such as intense beams of light in certain parts of the aura as well as little bursts of light that look almost like stars.  These bursts behave a lot like little crystalized nodules of light that fly off from the aura or float for a few brief seconds before dissipating.  These are, I observe, the result of intense thought and feeling, and can be determined which they are based on the colors they are associated with and what parts of the body they are coming from (feeling may be more in the body while thinking may be nearer to the head for example).

wp-1466046882631.gif

The aura, contrary to the chart above, is not seen as a rainbow. The “rainbow body” is usually only detected in people who have released a lot of suppressed emotional energy. The aura is lighter than depicted above. If I saw an aura as depicted in the image to the right, I would expect mental illness or physical illness.

Yet ANOTHER wrinkle are auras that are divided into multiple color zones.  One side of the body can have one color while the other side has yet another.  Not always, but often I have noted that when this happens, the person is feeling out of balance somehow.  this shows up as one side being one color and the other being another color. In other cases I have seen much more localized areas that go from one color to another.  In this case, thought and emotional energy, as well as physical energy is swirling and changing.

Taking all of this in as a whole while looking at the aura will provide you with a pretty broad world of possibility in what an aura can communicate.  Auras are highly personal in how they are from person to person, and this is important to note as you look at people.  I knew one person who never deviated from the base-line color that he had around his body the whole time I knew him except for one instance. And having said this, I have seen people whose “baseline” is to be a world of swirling changing energy.

I once had a teacher whose aura would do this really wild thing, which was so very much about who he was.  I never saw it in quite the same way with anyone else.  His aura was like a capacitor. Do you know what a capacitor is in electronics?  Well, if you don’t, a capacitor will draw energy, store it, and then release it suddenly after a given amount of time.  My teacher would have this aura that would grow in size in a sphere shape and then it would build in brilliance for a few seconds and then as he would say something, a thought in his head seconds before, his aura would flash brightly, after which it would then dim down until he got to his next idea.  What he was doing, I realized, was the WAY that he experienced his thoughts, which was like a flash of realization….moment to moment, though.  He was the kind of person who didn’t always know what he was going to say next, and was always in that moment of working it through mentally, and the moment that he realized HOW he was going to say what he was going to say, there would come this flash! It was at first disconcerting to see, but I came to realize that this was a peculiarity with how his own thinking went.

Now I have also seen similar flashes, many actually, in the aura, and they are often associated with a person thinking and then figuring out what they are about to say next, so this type of flashing can, in my own experience, be tied to seeing a person’s thought process unfold before me.  In fact, it is phenomenon like this that has helped me to understand how some people think and how they link language with the thoughts that they are thinking.  People who are very visual will often wind up with images passing through the aura almost like a kind of etheric television displaying their thoughts in a ghost-like form.  If you watch, you will often see that the flash comes just before the words come out.  In this way you can see how the aura will show you how the person is handling their thoughts, the character of how they think or process information.

Now occasionally, and only on a few cases have I seen dark colored auras.  This has been very rare. However, in one case, I saw a man who had a dark aura with very strange color patterns in it.  Instead of the colors being bright and light, they were…metallic in character.  I learned later that this person was on anti-psychotic medication for some issues he had with mental illness.  I was lucky in this case because I knew to steer clear of him based on what I had seen.

The aura can change throughout the body, from head to toe.  When this happens, you have to be able to intuit what the reasoning is for this.  Is it because of a weakness in one part of the physical body?  Subsumed emotion?  Perhaps blocked prana flow?  Any of these and more might be the culprit, so it is important to continue to view in order to tease out the reason behind what it is that you are seeing.  Being able to determine what “body” the energy is from is a studied ability.  This is not always easy to do, and it is best that you allow your own intuition and experience rule the day.

There are about five different bodies that are expressed in the aura. This is interesting because the Hindu describe five “koshas” a term that means sheath or layer, which means that they conceptualize all of our different aspects as layers or dimensional aspects in the energy body and consciousness and it shows up as these five layers.  In fact each chakra has five dimensional aspects that correspond to each of them. Okay, so the layers and what they are….

These five layers are the (1) emotional body, the (2) mental body, the (3) physical body, the (4) astral/soul body, and the (5) pranic or energy body itself.  All these energies go to form a matrix that make up who you are at any given moment.  Most often I have found that the energy that is tightly focused to the body IS connected to the physical body.  Again, you have to watch and observe, because sometimes this is not always the case! Sometimes when ideas or feeling are very pressing in the moment, I have seen this energy come to the fore and express itself close to the body when it most often plays through the aura more from a distance from the physical body itself.  I know that this all may sound dizzyingly complex, but in time you WILL be able to intuitively tease out which is which.  Experience will also be your guide in the same way that it was for me, but its good to take mental notes and then to also ask questions of your subject.  I recommend having numerous people who would like their aura to be read by you in exchange for communicating to you what it is that they are feeling so that you can learn to calibrate what it is you are seeing with what the person is revealing.  Remember; you are actually feeling all of this deeper down, so if you can learn to forge a good relationship with the part of you that feels (this is not to be confused with emotion….this is your inner sensitivity, which is a different thing).

Still yet another wrinkle in this is how far out you can detect the aura.  How far can you see outward from the aura?  In the beginning you might only see energy close to the body.  In time, though, you may learn to see further and further away from the body.  This tends to get into the subtle or astral body and leads into issues connected to the soul.  The more accute your sensing becomes, the further outward you will most often be able to see.  Also, there are some people whose energy goes beyond ones ability to even see.  Many years ago, about the first year I was seeing auras, I had the opportunity to see a native American healer speak at a nearby college. My friend and I went to see him and we both “tuned in” to see what his energy looked like.  And we both saw the strangest thing; he had no color at all!  In fact, his energy was more like non-colored lines of force that I had seen in natural objects, but not in people.  Not only this, but his energy would build and then it would drop back….it was doing this pulsing thing the whole time he was speaking.  It was as though he was a channel for some energy that was itself on the very edge of our ability to detect.  This man had been involved in some important healing work and was able to draw physical sickness out of a person in a way that appeared rather miraculous to us at the time.

It is possible that when you first start seeing the aura that you do not detect color.  This sometimes is the case for some people.  In this case, I think it is instructive to allow yourself to open up more to let the color in.  I know how this sounds, but you are not dealing with something thought-based but something that is all about feeling….and you most certainly can and do feel auras first and foremost.  As you look at the aura ask yourself where is the color?  Ask yourself to show the color and then wait.  Keep looking, keep observing, and be patient.  The matter is one of tuning in.

If you are unable to see the aura well using the methods I showed you in the first installment, I will tell you about how I first began to see auras, because I think it is helpful in understanding just how much this does not have to do with what you think or anything in your head.

I was late for class.  I had been working in my room and I had to sprint clear across campus to get to class before the bell tolled and I was late.  My teacher had always said that if you are late, don’t bother coming.  He often dismissed students who came in only a minute late to class.  So I was chugging away and running as fast as I could. I sped past the dorms and then the library and then the chapel. I was about ready to feel like I was going to faint when I rounded the steps up to the Art building.  I felt like I was being deprived of oxygen.  Everything I was doing was focused on getting enough oxygen back into my body so I could walk into the classroom. I made it to class on time and as I walked up the steps, I breathed very deeply so I would not be huffing and puffing in class.  What happened during this experience was I was suddenly focused in my body, not in my head.  A shift had happened. It was just enough to bring energy into focus for the first time.  And that was it: I was using my body, not my mind, to FEEL this energy.  And what I know is that when I tune into auras, I feel as though my whole body, my own energy body, is actually the thing that is picking this all up.  I have often felt as though I had this satellite dish in my solar plexus that picks all of this up.  “What does your gut say?” is an apt term to use here.  The idea is that we do not use our minds, we are using the whole of our own energy field to detect other fields like our own around us.

Now I tell you this story partly because it could help you in developing another way to see auras that is based in the mechanics of seeing.  Maybe you might want to work out with some heavy cardio and then see what you see.  Get out of your head and  get into your body.  FEEL.  The other reason I am telling you this is because I told a friend of mine about my aura experience and about a year later he told me the story of a friend of his who also started to see auras and she had told him that she had been running across campus, too.  However, my friend was at a school in Virginia while I was at a school in another state.  There was NO WAY for the woman who started seeing them to have known about my story at all.  I think we both hit upon the same trigger, which is strong exercise to root you in the awareness of the body.  The level of exertion I had was such that I was breathing heavily and I felt as though my heart beat was pounding in my chest, the whole of my body, and also my eyes.  I was completely focused in my body.  So there is that important bit of information for you!

Walter Kilner wrote a book entitled The Human Aura.  It is available from Amazon and while it is not a psychic review of the aura, but rather one that involved the use of sensitizing screens made up of cyanin for seeing the aura, a lot of the shapes and issues he saw while doing his work as a doctor is accurate for anyone who wants more insight. he method that Kilner used was to, perhaps, extend his visual acuity into the range where auras begin to be seen through a sensitizing process.  I suspect that some of Kilner’s observations may have also been of a psi nature mixed with his screen method.  Its an older book, perhaps from the 40’s or so, but is relevant for anyone who wants to know more. There is not a huge amount of information out there on this aside from the now-popular aura photography (which I can’t speak to since I am not familiar enough with it—it may be accurate but it appears to use a different method with different results that are at variance with the color schemes I see naturally).

Djwal Kuhl, who, as I recall, was the name of an ascended master who channeled the book some years ago has a book about the aura also.  My memory is that it is less about mechanics and more about issues related to clearing ones own aura and doing spiritual work (which may in fact be helpful).

The benefit of using your inner sensing to see auras is that in healing work you can keep some energies from becoming entangled in your own.  However, when doing healing work, it is important to realize that the healer should themselves be healed before embarking on healing work or else the imprint of healer or patient can be made.  This is where the healer must work carefully and consciously. if you have an issue that you have not healed, you will often find that you have patients who come to you with the same issue or a related issue. These will also change as you do healing work.  This is based on discussions I have had with other healers.  The law of attraction at work.  So it is helpful to get as clear as you can to be as helpful wen working with energy healing.  The more healed you are, the more neutral you will be and the more effective you will be.

One thing that is possible is that you can detect illness before it manifests in the body.  You can see conditioned that involved blocked energy that if you do healing work, you can more directly address quickly by looking at the aura.  I once knew a doctor who used his ability to see the aura as a prelude to his own exam of his patients.  He never let them know that he saw the aura, but it helped him to more clearly understand the root of the problem.  Unfortunately, in our present day, we think that the answer often lies in popping a pill.  The benefit for seeing energy is that sometimes when it comes to physical problems you can often detect that the problem where the person is identifying as the point of trouble or pain is actually located in another part of the body and that this is creating a “cascade” of other symptoms.  This can often happen with the spine and legs.  Pain in the lower back can sometimes show up in the knees or feet, or even in the shoulders depending on the type of imbalance.  Knowing this can clue you in much more quickly than a “hunt and peck” method.

As I sit here, I am laying back and looking at the energy in my hands and I realize that my own aura has changed over time.  I see now how there is a rainbow of colors that come out of my fingertips and that this relates to something having to do with the flow of prana in my body. I see how two of my fingers are more strongly charged with energy and that these fingers also correspond, interestingly, with the active fingers with meridian lines as described in Chinese medicine, for example. I also see how an emotional issue has effected one side of my body today and it has not yet cleared up in my right hand.  As a result, I focus energy into that part of my body in order to clear up the blocked energy which is just my holding back some emotion.  As I do a simple breathing exercise I can see how the energy comes back into my body since breathing always helps me to ground myself in the body as well as relax me. As I do this, I see how on one side of the opposite hand, there is a strong glow of violet color, which shows that I am tapping into my own intuitive power and my inner senses.  My physical health is excellent as the brilliance of my energy shows.  My color is a changing force-field that adapts to the needs of the moment.  Perfect.

The aura is often described as electromagnetic in nature.  I think that it is certainly this as we have a low level of electricity flowing through us all the time. But prana is a still-finer energy vibration that electricity, and it is this finer energy that shows up along with the field of physical energy.  Prana is itself the energy that records and shows all other energies.  I say this because I observe that it is through prana that all other energies get recorded into the vast field of energy that exists all around us and the planet at any given time.

Beyond this is also energies in nature, in plants and animals and in objects.  Sometimes we leave some of our energy behind us in things.  Some years ago I saw the most amazing thing happening with a tree in my yard.  This took place at night and I had never seen anything like this before, which was that I saw thousands of very fine points of light that were flowing out of the tree and into the night air.  As I watched this I asked myself what on earth this was.  The simple answer was that the tree was “breathing” out energy that it built up during the day and needed to release at night.  I had simply never been able to detect this type of energy before.  I had seen fields around trees and animals, but nothing like this before. The whole earth itself is a living biosphere full of all kinds of energy.  We all exist like fish exist in a sea.  We share it together.  We feel it all together, even when we are unaware or focused in other directions.  Sometimes, when you become adept at picking up on energy in this way, open your mind to the world mind, to the body of the world and feel into that rich sphere of awareness and see what there is for you to see and know.  This is YOUR Gaia.  This is your cradle of life.  What does it mean for you?  What does its energy tell you beyond the mirror of your own thoughts?

Seeing the aura can provide you with a wealth of information that can help you a lot in your life.  You can detect emotional and mental issues pretty quickly in the aura.  It can give you perspective and it can help you a lot in your own inner work by showing you that yes, we are multidimensional beings and yes, energy is a real thing.  It can bring new perspective and it can inoculate you against the ignorance of a strict physicaly-oriented view of the world.

If you are an ardent seeker like me and like to understand how your insides work, one indispensable  tool at your command needs to be a dream journal. Keeping a journal by your bed and giving yourself a few minutes each morning to jot down your impressions from the night’s dream activities is a great way to begin charting your psyche.  I have been keeping a dream journal since high school, and now with over 35 years worth of journals to thumb through, I have discovered a lot of very interesting things about my dream landscape, how it has evolved, and it has also helped me in understanding that there are some symbology that I use that has remained unchanged while other symbols shift and turn with time like phases of the moon.

A few advantages I have found that have come with keeping a dream journal is that I have been able to identify

  • fears
  • frustrations
  • misperceptions
  • desires

More than just this, though, a dream journal allowed me to identify that not only had I had precognitive dreams, it helped me to identify the cyclic nature of these dreams that foretold in amazing detail elements from my future.

I recently looked back at an old dream journal from the time that I met the woman who would become my wife.  In one of the dreams I had of her in the very beginning, I had her show up at my house with some “off-duty clowns.”  When I read about this scene, I smiled; being married to this person was like having a bunch of circus clowns in my life, that is for sure!  Don’t get me wrong; I am not being mean.  I actually think the dream was trying to warn me of something!  It is funny how I can look back on my life in waking and see how I had elements in both dream and waking that both showed me clear clues as to the nature of how some relationships would work out if I had only chosen to listen.

  • Keeping a journal of your dreams can actually help you develop a keener sense of your own awareness and intuition.
  • Keeping a dream journal can provide you with a wealth of insight into your emotional landscape.
  • Keeping a dream journal can help you to understand how your subconscious communicates to your conscious mind through symbols.
  • Keeping a journal can help you identify psychic or precognitive elements.
  • Keeping a dream journal can help you to better understand where you are emotionally at any moment in your life.

Consider beginning to keep a dream journal.  I have found just 15 minutes each morning is all that is needed.  Sometimes when I can’t remember the dreams from the night before, I take my journal with me in case I remember it later.  As time goes by, I build a rich bedrock of understanding of myself over a long period of time.  And it really helps to put things in perspective.  By using this in addition to inner work, meditation, guided imagery, and other forms of therapeutic work, you can help build a solid core of understanding about the workings of your own self in a way that you might not have had previously.

This article was too interesting not to reprint here. I think any time that we can use different tools to understand a given phenomenon, it can sometimes yield unexpected results or information that can serve to help us to understand  things better.  While the results may suggest that the woman was merely thinking she was moving or out of body, I think the research helps point to how the brain handles this kind of data.  I hope researchers are not quick to reach conclusions!  More information is probably needed, and this is a good start!  The article is below in total. Sadly, there is talk of this experience being like a hallucination….which troubles me because it continues this bias some have, many have, that consciousness cannot exist beyond the body (it is huge if it does, so let’s not toss out the baby with the bath water alright?).  It is just as possible that the brain is recording information that is existing BEYOND it…..and if it IS then that is HUGE!  And yet, I am very glad that this research is being done.  Being able to have robust discussion is important so people like us can bring our own ideas and proposals to the table for consideration.  Nonlocality would be a giant step or leap for humans to recognize in this kind of work!

It may sound like the plot of the Twilight Zone, but a psychology graduate student at the University of Ottawa says she can voluntarily enter an out-of-body experience. This was a lucky break for scientists, who were able to scan her brain during the episode.

Usually out-of-body experiences are a part of, say, a near-death experience. A patient may float above their own body as surgeons work on them. These experiences are usually attributed to the drugs in a patient’s system, or the hormones released into their system by trauma.

A unique experience

The study — which only involved this one person — was published Feb. 10 in the journal Frontiers of Human Neuroscience, a peer-reviewed open access publication. The researchers are members of the School Of Psychology at the University of Ottawa.

According to the paper, this woman enters her out-of-body state right before sleeping, visualizing herself from above. She started doing so during naptime in preschool, they write. She currently only does it sometimes.

The researchers wrote in the paper:

She was able to see herself rotating in the air above her body, lying flat, and rolling along with the horizontal plane. She reported sometimes watching herself move from above but remained aware of her unmoving “real” body…

She told the researchers:

I feel myself moving, or, more accurately, can make myself feel as if I am moving. I know perfectly well that I am not actually moving. There is no duality of body and mind when this happens, not really. In fact, I am hyper-sensitive to my body at that point, because I am concentrating so hard on the sensation of moving. I am the one moving – me – my body. For example, if I ‘spin’ for long enough, I get dizzy. I do not see myself above my body. Rather, my whole body has moved up. I feel it as being above where I know it actually is. I usually also picture myself as moving up in my mind’s eye, but the mind is not substantive. It does not move unless the body does.

The brain out of the body

The researchers did a fMRI before and after asking her to enter her out-of-body state to find out what that looked like in the brain. They compared these to when she was imagining, but not actually entering, the state.

Interestingly, the pathway that seemed to be activated during her out-of-body experience is also involved in the mental representation of movements.

brain scan activated areas

Andra M. Smith and Claude Messier, Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, 2014

Brain regions activated by the out-of-body experience include the supplementary motor area, the cerebellum, the supramarginal gyrus, the inferior temporal gyrus, the middle and superior orbitofrontal gyri.

Some parts of her brain involved in interpreting vision were turned down in activity, as shown below:

brain scan inhibited areas

Andra M. Smith and Claude Messier, Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, 2014

Brain regions inhibited by the out-of-body experience include the visual cortex.

She didn’t have any specific emotions surrounding this experience, and i t seems to be a kind of hallucination she can turn on at will.

What’s happening?

Even if there is no soul stuck in our bodies, this woman isn’t making this up. There’s obviously something happening in her brain that is making her experience the world in a different way — but researchers can’t yet say exactly what it is.  Plus, this study was about one woman’s out-of-body experience, not all out-of-body experiences.

Still, the changes they observed could be similar to how the brain can be trained using meditation. The researchers even suggested that this could be something many kids can do, but that with practice could be carried into adulthood.

Interestingly, the researchers suggested that this kind of experience may be much more common than we thought. The woman in question actually “appeared surprised that not everyone could experience this,” the researchers wrote.

They compared it to synesthesia — the condition in which people hear colors or smell sounds — which was thought of as “out there” but has become widely accepted in the last few decades.

Someone recently wrote to me and described a harrowing process he is going through in awakening.  No doubt, he is caught in this tight vice of an experience and is having trouble getting to the other side of it.  And yet, the process he is locked in is what kundalini does to us.  It rewires us, remakes us. It really does. Its easy for me to forget what it was like before awakening. Its getting easy now for me to forget what it was like that first year when I felt awakening stirring in me. It was so obvious how I had changed.  I write in my book, which is based on many journal entries during the awakening that it was as though I woke up one day speaking a different language.  From another planet. Just like that.  Boom.  Transformation underway.  Bye-bye Kansas!  But what my friend helped to remind me about is how we can get caught up in others’ feelings without realizing its them that we are feeling.
There is a curious capacity we develop when we awaken which is the ability to feel a person’s emotions and feelings so strongly that they feel like they are our own.  It is disorienting sometimes to have this happen, but the key to coping with this part of the experience is with awareness. Having the ability to stop and ask yourself a few simple questions is all that you will need to begin to discern between what is truly yours and what is someone else’s.

In awakening you go through a whole range of new sensory experiences.  If you think that it’s all in your head, you will need to realize that this is simply not so.  It IS in your head, but it’s also in all things.  And the power that is now alive in your head now has the capacity to move the power latent in all things….which is to say that by connecting into the energy in all things you can more effectively get things done that need doing. this is a radically different approach to anything most people know about.  It touches on the idea of manifesting but it’s also different in how immediate and strong that it is.  Jesus, the Gnostic Jesus, described this phenomenon.  He said that “once you are destroyed [ego death], when you say mountain move, it will move.”  These are the siddhis or powers written about in the old Vedic texts.  It is what anyone who awakens discovers they have.  It is also what many say should be ignored, lest they seduce you.  Well, yes, you do need to be careful with this stuff, but if you can approach it all with the innocence of a child, you can direct this power in the same way you direct an arm or your voice in order to get what you want or need.  I suppose that some feel its wrong or bad because it is an unfair advantage, but really all it is, is what you gain when you finally grow up, go through this spiritual puberty we call awakening.  Thus, everyone can inherit it. It is an ability that is of a higher order, and so with this power comes great responsibility, most certainly.  I have always asked for what I needed the most and most often in the eleventh hour.

One of the experiences is how you can feel others around you, near you emotionally, or who are connected to you spiritually, or people who are complete strangers who happen to mirror something in you.  Some of these senses are so strong that the experience is that you are yourself experiencing something as though it was your own when in fact it is from someone else.  Let me explain that for a time I would pass people on the street and I would feel their buried sense of sadness, broken-hearted feeling, their depression, their sorrow, their anxiety.  I would walk by someone on the street and I would double over from the heart pain.  Why?  Because I was more sensitive.  I was a vibrating tuning fork.  There was also another reason why I was feeling some things over others; I was not yet finished with something that was present also in these people. So for example, a man who had been injured by his spouse in his heart I would feel because he and I had the same pain in us.  I didn’t JUST feel EVERYONE.  I felt certain people. There was a rhyme and reason.  It was about mirroring. Why hadn’t I felt the lady who was walking down the street with her kids, why hadn’t I felt the old man who was walking with his wife?  Why hadn’t I felt the college student’s energy?  I had to realize I was not feeling EVERYONE.  Just certain people.  Sure, I may have had the potential to feel or read everyone the same way I read auras, but I would not ever read or feel them as deeply or as closely as what this kundalini conferred.  The events in our lives are no accidents. They follow an inner directive from us.  And if that seems impossible to you, consider that I have watched and observed this and have seen so many correlations with this that I can no longer dismiss it.  THis is not a need for me to dwell in magical thinking.  It is a realization that either the world is chaos rendered into order by way of natural forces and its all just chemistry and nothing else, or everything is here because of consciousness and that everything IS consciousness.  This would be on par with what some have called this world; A Dream.

So it came to pass that I was at a dinner party. As I was talking with some new people I had met I began to be seized by a feeling of desperate anxiety.  I have been anxious before like this in the past.  I knew what that felt like.  It felt entirely as though it were my own.  I was feeling an energy within my own cocoon of awareness, within my own etheric sheath or auric field. It was mine, no?  Something in me said that maybe this wasn’t mine.  I thought about it.  It made no sense that it would be mine.  For one, there was no reason why I should be feeling so incredibly anxious. None. So I let my reasoning mind take some rope and try to lasso this thing some.  This is one instance where the rational does well!  So  I sat there and took stock of myself. Instead of JUST reacting.   If this wasn’t mine, then whose was it?  I asked the energy in me to show me the way.  And by golly, it did.  In a room with about seven people, the energy in me pointed me toward a man who was sitting in a chair off to the side.  He had been talking to my mother and he wasn’t someone I knew.  I decided to just be bold and speak to the man about this.

“Excuse me, but do you have a problem with feeling anxiety?”  The man pulled back in his chair, like a turtle pulling in its head. He was entirely taken off guard by my very forward question.  He had stiffened.  But as I looked at him, it was clear that I did not mean it in a hard or mean way.  I was more like a kid.  His face softened and he replied, “Well, yes, I have had some issues with anxiety.”  We both paused for a moment and he looked at me, something clearly on his mind.  He added, “In fact, I have had so much of a problem with anxiety that I have gone to therapy for it and have taken medication.”  He stopped for a third time and did the same thing; he looked at me like he was pondering something else and he said the magic words: “In fact, I was feeling very anxious the moment that you asked me about it!”  I smiled and thanked him.  I explained that I seemed to be picking up on stuff like this for some reason.  This interaction was the first case where I began the process of discerning between what was mine and what was others’ feelings.

After that incidence, the tendency to feel people like this waned somewhat. Part of it was that I tended to limit my focus more.  For some reason I had to be as open as a parking lot I think in order to begin a process of clearing, which began in earnest around that time.  As I Have cleared these old blocks, the things that I have mirrored or attracted have also changed substantially.  I once had students that were of a certain character and they have, largely, changed.  My behavior has also changed.  This results in a different kind of day and life for me. It’s an incremental process, this, but worth it because what it does is it gives me an energetic vehicle that I am in command of instead of being in command of a mass of karmic blocks and knots in my energy field….serving to distort the energy coming into me and also distorting the events that get manifested because of all those competing knots that send out bits of competing code signals to the universe.  They are me, but they are parts of me I wish I was not….but that I have not fully released.

When people say things like “She is haunted by her demons” you can know now that they are old blocks that are doing it.  These blocks act like subroutines in your psyche causing you to behave in ways you really wish you hadn’t.  Some people are entirely governed by these things. In the Gospel of Philip in the Nag Hammadi, this is what Philip describes as being the evil that must be pulled out entirely by the roots if it is to be freed from our being. It is what keeps us from doing what we want to do and it makes us do what we do not want to do.

You may not believe it, but once you learn how to look beyond the curtain of your own denied emotion, you will be given power over all your demons.  Until you do, you will be tempted by them.  Until you are the master and no longer the slave.   If you want to know about releasing blocks from your own field, I suggest you search the blog using those terms.  A lot has been written about it here.

I grew up with altered states of awareness.  Later in life when I left home to go to college, I experienced an expansion of these abilities which included seeing auras and some unusual energy effects.  I have observed over many years the development of abilities in this vein and have watched what one thing led to after years of experience.  I am not an expert, I am a participant.  I am also a very careful observer and my sense is that utilizing the scientific method is a sound way to wards a better understanding of just what is happening.  I say use whatever tool you have.  It isn’t going to suddenly make an ability evaporate.  But there are some things that will assist with them.

There may be a physiological basis for psychic ability, since my sense is that psi is not JUST some etheric woo-woo energy but is based most likely in our body’s ability to pick up on weak signals and translate them so that they make sense enough for us to interpret them in a meaningful way.  To do this, the brain has to do some pretty amazing work for us in order to create a picture that we can relate to and that has enough of the original information within it to generate the right kind of picture.  I will explain more about this when I touch on seeing auras in a little bit.

My own gut sense based on what I have observed is that the mind actually goes through a shift in how it is used and how noisy it is.  This reduction in inner noise can help to boost awareness of the subtle field of energy that is all around us, and it is this subtle or low level energy that I feel contains a wealth of information.  Further, I feel that our bodies are perfect biological machines for picking this energy up.  It is not coincidence that electrical currents conduct with the help of certain metals like sodium, and sodium is moving all through our bodies.  I just think that on balance, it is far easier to filter out these signals than to pay attention to them, and this is what most people do.  But for the person who has psi ability, these filters are not in place, or it may just seem so.

I know that I have been and continue to be someone who spends a lot of time in what others would call a spacey kind of state of mind.  I have used this tendency to my advantage in my creative work as an artist, and I very much feel that this is in no way a detrimental state in any way, but our culture has a leaning in the other direction.  We do not see such “daydreaming” as productive because if we are doing that, we are forgetting to do the things that need doing like taking out the trash and feeding the dog.  And yet, it was Einstein who was riding on a trolley car who had a great discovery all as a result of his daydream of pretending to be a point of light moving at the speed of light away from a central point.  In that moment, Einstein had allowed himself to drift and engage in imaginative play when this great idea struck him.  Now I know that we aren’t talking psi ability here, but I know that for myself, all of my altered states, out of body experiences, and energetic experiences all had one thing in common; I allowed myself to drift away from the rational into what I now know to be a more whole-brained state.  It just SEEMS like we are being dreamy when we live in a world that is so left brained dominant. But I think that the two hemispheres of the brain are the two vital mirrors for our reality and if we are going to sense beyond our own physical senses, we have to first be at the root level in all of this and this means the brain and how it cooperates in signal processing.  Sound hi-faluting?  It’s not.

It’s just that the left brain is very good at sequential information while the right brain is more holistic, and I think, able to deal with things as a whole.  Considering the aura is a good example; the aura is made up of a series of “layers” of information all existing at once and being presented in the field we call the aura.  There is definite biological information being presented, emotional, mental, and for lack of a better word “spiritual” material.  And this is being presented all at once.  This is the kind of thing the left brain isn’t very good at.  It is very good at taking things one particle at a time, identifying it in a linear fashion and then developing a strategy for acting on that information in some way.  It is the right brain that leads us to those far-out places where anything is possible.  the right brain is the dreamer in this sense (not to say you can’t have a great dream in the left brain, it is just going to be different in some important ways).

Being able to dissociate is a big hallmark for many psychics.  this does not always mean being “spacey” but this aspect may help lead to it.  What is interesting to note is that I have had some psi experiences that were smack dab in the realm of spaced-out states of mind while others, like seeing auras, were triggered when I was powerfully present, focused, but devoid of mind chatter.  One of the most powerful experiences I have had was a past life experience that involved huge amounts of energy that fueled my ability to see and be present in multiple perspectives all at once.  In this state of mind, I was at once slightly dissociated, but also powerfully present.  It was a kind of balance that had been struck, but I was not tuned out, I was tuned IN.  I think that this is important to recognize.

I think there is a level of dissociation that may be necessary in psi experience, and yet, within that “place” or space there is also a great deal of focus.  This is, I believe, simply a different type of focus.  I think we tend to want to define focus based on what we know from our mean level of focus, or what we know to be focus in most instances.  However, this precludes the possibility for other very valid forms of focus that are simply not the focus we use to get through our day in the usual way. This focus involves becoming more aware of the self and the body.  In doing this, I am aware that I am tuning into my own energy more.  As I focus on that energy, I am also tuning into  those subtle frequencies that are normally lost or filtered out or not noticed.  I think that for me, it is simply bringing in a very weak signal instead of being overcome by all the stronger ones, such as the vivid visual signals streaming in from my eyes, or auditory sensory stimuli from my ears.  I shift focus from those inputs and I feel as though I am tuning an inner radio to a distant signal from somewhere around Jupiter.  I turn the nob ever so slightly in my awareness and I get something….barely something…..but I just keep tuning it in….boosting the signal through awareness….and suddenly….there it is.  As a result of this, I have found that as my energy capacity has increased, so have the vividness of my psi abilities and inner experiences.  I think it’s a matter of focus and then signal boosting by learning to bring in more energy which acts in the same way as an amplifier does when taking a weak signal from something like an i-Pod or CD player.

Now, if you know how I write, you know that I do not normally write like this.  I am having to go about this in a much drier and more left brained way in order to make sense of this.  Some of this material, I just know, and in truth, I don’t think that I have ever given the signal boosting idea much thought, but it has always been there and obvious to me all along.  Really, I don’t think psi is woo-woo.  I think it is merely energy that carries information (like any energy does for us from radio waves to microwave transmissions in our commercial communications networks) and that is that.  What the “psychic” has been able to do is to locate that focus within themselves to tune in and then boost the signal.  The stronger the boost, the more complete the information in my experience.  As a result, I do think we all can do this, we just don’t have a good empirical way to explain it or identify it.  The problem here is that instead of turning on a phone to speak to a friend, we are having to access hardware and software in our own bodies in order to do this, and there are no on buttons to be found, or any of the familiar navigation buttons that we might find on electronics hardware to help us to find our way.

The issue of auras is an interesting one because I was able to observe what happened to me when I first began seeing them.  It was a set of very specific circumstances that took place and I am going to recount them here for what it is worth.  I was in college, I was late to class and this meant I had to run across campus in order to get to class on time.  The teacher was very clear about late arrivals; don’t bother if you are coming late to class.  As I sprinted across campus, all of my focus and energy was put into keeping my legs moving.  By the time I was nearly to the art building, I was huffing and puffing.  My body was starved for oxygen and all of my focus was on getting myself oxygenated and up those final two flights of stairs and into class just as the bell was beginning to toll.

I felt like I was about to pass out from all of this.  Within a few short minutes, I was seeing a brilliant haze around people in class and I considered that what I was experiencing was the aura (I had read up on it a good bit because I was fascinated with these kinds of things).  What I know took place was that my focus was placed in my body with few distractions.  I was very singular in my approach to all of this.  I also suspect that the awareness of energy was triggered by my awareness of my own energy field by being so focused on my body.  My mind was relatively free from mind chatter.  I was anxious, yes, but I my mind was not going a mile a minute.  My body was!

What I will share with you is that about a year after all of this happened, a somewhat skeptical friend of mine who I told this story to reported back to me that he had a friend who had begun to see auras after she had sprinted across campus in much the same way as I had.  My friend had not spoken to this person about my experience and was just relaying an interesting “coincidence” to me.

By being more focused on our bodies I think we are more focused on our own energy, which is connected to the body.  It is not some “overlay” that is coincident with the body.  they are of a piece.  for as much as the left brain wants to slice and dice all of this up into neat piles, all of these systems are part of an integrated whole.  By placing your focus on one, you are by necessity placing your focus on the other.  The linkage was quite easily created in that moment when I was focused on my body in that way.  In a sense, this experience began to relate me to my own energy field which I contend plays a vital role in “seeing” auras.  Now to make matters worse, I am going to tell you that you DO NOT actually SEE auras.  I know you think you do.  I know it seems like you do, but the truth here is that your eyes simply cannot pick up on the wavelength of energy where the aura resides.  Seeing energy?  No?  So what gives?

I have talked to physiological psychologists about this issue and they all have agreed when I asked them that if the brain were presented with stimuli that does not come from the five main senses, the brain will do its best to shoe-horn that information into a sensory portion of the brain so that it can make sense of it all. I don’t know for sure that the brain is even trying to make sense of ANYTHING.  It may just be doing its job as best it can.  If you are aware of information streaming in from a different source, then it seems the brain is duty-bound to try to make sense out of it.  So seeing them is itself a kind of neat trick.  It is also a very useful one since it creates a kind of hologram that is extremely useful for how much information it includes.  I resisted this idea initially, but I came to the conclusion that yes, my energy field DOES tune into the energy of others.  I am like a big antenna picking up these signals and then making sense of them in some way.  I knew this all came from my solar plexus.  But that is me.  I could feel how my own energy acted like a radio receiver, beaming in and allowing itself to be effected by the energy around it in a much more conscious way. Somehow the information was being flawlessly translated to my “eyes” for review.  After I made this realization I ceased being able to see auras for a couple of years.   But don’t worry: I kind of psyched myself out for a while—my inner vision returned and all is well.

Now all of this gets down to what I like which is the nitty gritty of psi ability.  It is itself a cautionary tale in how we are walking around in a sea of energy and it is important I think to realize that we do a lot to tune these waves out.  Perhaps we have to just to keep sane.  There is a lot said about psychic defense, and most of it is, to put it bluntly, misguided in some important ways.  So for the price of how much it costs to keep your computer running these next few moments, I will explain this to you, and bear with me because I know its a pretty big claim and is at odds with a lot that we know about psychic defense.

Psychic defense is very limited for the reason that you cannot keep energy at bay.  You can keep your awareness OFF the energy, but not the energy itself.  If you think about what you do when you create a barrier to defend yourself, what really do you think you are doing?  Have you observed closely enough to tell?  You will have to decide for yourself,  but I know what the answer is for me.  When we set up a defensive barrier what we are doing is creating  a way for our minds not to focus on something.  We are in effect creating a symbolic wall for awareness.  And yet, in all truth, our awareness has not limit once we are using the etheric or light body. the physical body certainly has limits.  You can only jump so high, you can only see so far, you can only process so much information at a time or squeeze someones hand only so hard before the muscles quit.  the etheric or energy body is not so limited.  What limits you in truth is your AWARENESS of what is going on around you, and a defensive barrier is a kind of hypnotic suggestion you make to yourself NOT to pay attention to something.  If you see how people set up walls of protection it is all the same whether it is white light or a brick wall.  It serve the same purpose.  You think you are keeping things out but what you really are doing is you are keeping it out of your current awareness.

Here is the other thing to realize which is that like energy attracts like energy.  Until YOU change your own energy, you will maintain an attracting effect to certain types of energy.  To understand this means some pretty thorough analysis of the people or their energy involved.  This is normally noted over a long period of time or from someone like me who is telling you about it so you can be more aware of it in the future.  The things that will hang you up the most will tend to reside within a cluster of things that will tend to repeat.  To see the repeat might take some observation on your part, but it is there.  I know a healer who explained to me that she had clients come to her who all were dealing with the same sorts of issues, all issues that she was dealing with also.  As she progressed through her life, there were different issues that would come up and so the clients who came in to see her would likewise shift and change in similar fashion.  Something happens when energy vibrates in sympathy; we take notice most often.  This is just as easily done with negative as positive energy.  What can be weird is how attracted we will be to someone even when the underlying energy is itself negative in nature!  Soul connections are very much like this but most people do not seem to get past the “Vibrating in sympathy” part to see the underlying issues involved.  It is really a big kind of trick in a way, and it is a trick we can overcome and understand better by learning a little about how sympathetic energy works.  it can go positive or negative, and regardless, it is the sympathetic vibration that feels so good to us!  I know this might be hard to take, but it is true, and if you are able to integrate this awareness, you can develop a level of understanding about what used to move and affect you and ascend into a still finer understanding.

So the best place to be is one where the chaos of someone else’s energy just does not matter.   The way through this is by healing the issue in you that is causing the sympathetic vibe to begin with. So often the sympathetic vibe has to do with an issue we have with other people.  Maybe someone’s manner is annoying to you, or they are abrasive, perhaps they are jealous, full of envy, or chaotic emotionally.  See, you would not have a problem with such people if you yourself was not at peace with what all of this is about.  When you are, you understand that the person is merely dealing with a lot of emotional baggage and you let them go through their machinations without it affecting you.  It is simply a non-issue.  Yes, they could be annoying, but they are not heart-rending.  You are more neutral.  In this neutral place you are also, perhaps paradoxically, more capable of anchoring compassion in the moment instead of getting upset.

All of this is energy 101.  I know it all sound behavioral, but energy IS feeling, so out of what you pick up from people is itself feeling, but feeling that is held at something of a distance from your own feeling awareness.  But it is there.  As you become more neutral, far more slides off your back and does not affect you.   THIS is the true nature of psychic defense. You can set up walls all you want, and yes you will keep things out, but it will be a limited form of exclusion. It is a good place to start, though, until you have mastered the refined art of healing yourself in order to be clear enough to not be affected by that sea of energy.  Most often we put up walls out of fear or anxiety, and fear and anxiety only breeds more of itself.  Putting up a wall against what we fear only delays dealing with the issue in ourselves.  I know this may not be what you wanted to hear, or maybe it is in fact just what you needed to hear.  Use mainstream defensive skills, but know that the ultimate “defense” is where it simply no longer affects you.

Now having said that, I will also say that I have had to set up very clear boundaries with some people in my life simply because of the chaos that the brought.  I also know that in that moment, I still have an issue with it myself, but I have also learned that I cannot heal chaos by staying in chaos.  I have to get to a different place in myself that is capable of healing that weird attraction to the drama that created the attraction in the first place.  It has been a real trap to try and fix it by going down into the mire.  That never works unless you are perfectly clear, and most often when we descend into the depths, we just simply aren’t clear by definition.

All of this is a work in progress for all of us, and some of these ideas will take a while to mature in you.  For now, as you look at auras, it is helpful that you just SEE them until it is time that you feel them.  In feeling them, you may receive more information and more directly, and yet it will also be something that will feel more like an empathic response or experience.  This places you much closer into the field of awareness of the energy, so you do need to develop some skill in being able to be more neutral.  It can be difficult to be neutral when you suddenly sense someone’s deep state off anxiety, for example, but it can be done by not allowing yourself to take it on as if it is yours.  There was a time when I was swept away by this sea of energy until I learned to stop and ask myself if what I was feeling was really me.  Once I did that, I was able to discern who this was coming from and realize it wasn’t mine.  Once I did this, I no longer identified with it.  I didn’t NEED to make it mine.  I could understand that this was simply what another was going through and I could let it go and focus on other things, or perhaps tell a story that would get that person’s anxiety into a little more lighthearted space.  It is methods like this that can keep you from taking on the woes of the world.  We each have free will and sometimes it is not up to us to fix everything that someone is going through.  It is a curious fact that pain exists to help us to learn to no longer feel it.  Without that feedback, the pain can continue. This is one reason why anti-anxiety drugs most often do nothing to fix the underlying anxiety which is best fixed by no longer having a fixation on the hurt or fear that is bringing on the anxiety.  Numbing it takes out the one necessary catalyst within the self that can propel someone out of just such a state. I know that this might seem cold, but it is true that most people will not change until they are at the end of their rope.  Sometimes we just need a powerful enough incentive for change.  Until then, we tend our wounds probably long past their expiration date.

Learning how to navigate through all of this in a healthy way is one important step towards developing abilities in this arena.  I also know that what I have passed on to you may seem unconventional, but I suspect it does not get much press for the simple fact that it takes substantive change, and this is no easy task!  But it is worth it, I think.
